The Ultimate Guide To Effective Marble Care

Marble floors gives your home a luxurious feel. Deciding on the right choice of marble is one of the biggest decisions made while constructing one’s home. But to maintain the floor’s exquisite look we must understand it a little better.

Shine on marble is a property of the reflectiveness of the marble. For light to reflect well, there must be minimal or no scratches on the floor. So our aim is to prevent scratches on the floor! These 5 steps below are easily implementable to ensure your floors look like what you desired them to be.

 1.  Curb grim and dust entering from outside

The best way to do this, is to use the traditional approach of placing a good dust absorbing entrance floor mat. However the size of mat makes all the difference. The current research suggest that it takes at least 5 walking steps to remove most of the dirt from one’s shoes. Hence, an entrance mat must be long enough to absorb 5 walking steps.

2. Right mopping technique

Water is a definite must to have clean and beautiful looking floors. However, excess water can work against the marble. The simplest way to address this is to follow the right mopping method. Use a Damp Mop, it will make all the difference. Our intention is to keep the mop damp enough so that the loose dirt stick to the mop but does not leave streaks of water on the floor. On occasions of excess grim on the floors use a Neutral cleaner and clean the floor.

3.Keep away from acids

Natural marble will etch when exposed to acid. Since the shine on marble is the coefficient of its reflectiveness, usage of acid will work against the marble. Hence any acid based cleaning liquids are a definite no for marble care. Always use neutral cleaning liquids to clean Marble floors.

4.Sealant application

Marbles are porous and are easily susceptible to staining. It is advisable to seal marble floor with a good impregnating sealer. This helps in making the floor stain resistant and adds to easy maintenance of the high gloss finish. Always opt for a sealant that is both oil and water resistant. For best results sealant application must be carried out along with the restoration process. It is advisable to reseal the floor once every 3 years.

5.Prevent Scratches

To the extent possible try to avoid scratches on your marble. Marble is soft stone and can be subjected to scratches easily. Some common steps to avoid scratched are,

      • Stick felt pads at the base of your furniture
      • Plastic wheels either from a vacuum cleaner or from luggage trolley must be cleaned before being rolled on marble floors
      • Metal tips from mops must be well cushioned

This list is easily expandable based on individual lifestyles.

These pointers will ensure your marbles floors look stunning all year round. In a sorry case where your floors have already lost its sheen, then you can have your floors restored by a professional restoration agency to its original shine and then incorporate these techniques to maintain the shine.
