It is not everyday that one hears about homeowners being unhappy about their investments in natural stones as a choice of flooring or tabletop. Natural stones are exquisite materials that lend charm and opulence to any space. They are very durable and can last a lifetime with proper care.

However, in humid Indian environments, we at NKE Floorcare have observed effects on natural stones which work against the very nature of the stone, resulting in them becoming an eyesore. What was once viewed as an investment soon turns into a liability that homeowners are forced to live with.

The interesting fact is that most of these causes of despair are easily repairable. Hence, we have compiled a list of common concerns arising in natural stones in India and provided solutions right here for you. Below, in the first of the series, we have explained the cause for occurrence of efflorescence or salt patches, and cracks on stone surfaces.

1. Efflorescence or Salt patches on stone

Commonly observed on: Indian and Italian Marble, Lime stone

Meaning : Efflorescence is the process in which moisture in the underlying slab reacts with the natural stone or the cement substrate. Due to hydro pressure, moisture below the stone moves up to the surface. While the water content in the moisture evaporates, the salt content is left behind as residue on the surface of the stone. This results in patches on the stone, which when not addressed immediately becomes permanent.

Solution : A complete restoration of the floor and application of a good quality impregnating sealer will result in the removal of efflorescence. However, the permanent solution is constant care of the stone. Address any effects of efflorescence by cleaning the stone immediately.

2. Cracks and pits

Commonly observed on : Indian and Italian Marble, Lime stone, Granite and Sandstone.

Meaning : Cracks and pits are formed on natural stone when external pressure is applied on it. There are only two possible scenarios. Firstly, cracks may appear due to pressure applied from above the surface of the stone. Common examples are dragging of heavy luggage or furniture on the stone, or accidental dropping of objects. The second scenario is due to pressure applied from below the stone. Common causes for the same are hydro pressure or thermal expansion and contraction of the stone.

Solution : Mastic and epoxy resins are available that can be applied to close all cracks and pits, restoring the floor to it’s original uniform exquisite look.

In our next blog of the series we will cover aspects of etch mark removal and stain removal from natural stone. However, If you share any of these concerns and would like us to inspect your floors and advice you on the best way ahead. Please drop your contact here
