Demystify concerns around marble flooring - II

Blog 2 of 2

Natural stones like Marble and Granite, though exquisite in nature, can develop defects in Indian humid climate. This blog, the second in the series, demystifies 2 common problems—etch marks and stains—you may face on your natural stones. You can read our earlier blog on tackling efflorescence and cracks here.

3. Etch marks

Commonly observed on : Indian and Italian Marble and lime stone

Description : Most commonly used natural stones (except Granite) on exposure to acid, will develop etch marks. The best solution to avoid etch marks is to actually take care to prevent exposure of acids. Common domestic acids are Wine, Vinegar, Lime and most household cleaning liquids to name a few. Acids have the tendency to breakdown the stone thereby making the areas look dull. These areas are more prone to dust collection and have a tendency to look dark and prominent.

Solution : The floor must be thoroughly ground and polished to remove the etch marks off the floor. Application of special impregnating sealants can act as a mild resistant to the reaction of acids

4. Stains

Commonly observed on : All natural stone

Description : Since all natural stones are porous, they are all susceptible to staining. Floors that are protected with impregnating sealers are stain resistant. However, they are not stain proof. Certain substances that can create deep staining are Ink/ dyes, saffron, and bleeding from wooden doors and frames.

Solution : Stain removal is a tricky process. Superficial stains can be easily removed. However, if the stain has penetrated deep into the natural stone then it is almost completely unrecoverable. Trials must be conducted on each stain individually to ascertain how much of the floor is retrievable.
